Our story so far...
We are lucky enough to live in west Cornwall with our many beautiful ex-battery hens and our (currently) six rescue cats.
Getting ex-batts was initially just part of our green lifestyle; to provide us with truly free range eggs and to produce fertiliser for our organic veg beds. Little did I know the hold that these little girls would very quickly have on my heart!
From the moment my first three hens rushed across the garden into my arms I fell head over heels in love with them. Whilst I thought it was me doing the rescuing, in fact it was these three little hens, with their big hearts and unconditional love, that saved me. So in return I have made it my life’s mission to save as many of their sisters as I can. I now co-ordinate hen rehomings in Cornwall for ex-commercial hens and, in a bid to further raise awareness of the plight of ex-batts, I also write extensively about my gorgeous girls. They feature on websites such as Poultrykeeper.com and in magazines, as well as appearing in a regular column in Your Chickens. Some of them, including Bunty Goodchicken (left), have even had their stories told in a museum in Los Angeles!
As we take on the poorlie girls from rehomings, or adopt hens that have had other traumas in their life, we have built up a wealth of knowledge of ex-batt behaviour, health and ailments. My girls have taught me so much about the care and welfare of ex-batts - they have been such excellent teachers; I hope I have been a sufficiently competent pupil to now pass that knowledge onto you.
A note about our beautiful Henhugger logo: It was designed by a very talented artist called Holly Storm. For more information on Holly and her work please contact us via the Contact Us page.
